The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia defines culturally competent educators as those who ‘respect multiple cultural ways of knowing, seeing and living, celebrate the benefits of diversity and have an ability to understand and honour differences’ (DEEWR 2009, p. 16).
This session will draw on contemporary theories and practice to enhance participants’ skills and knowledge regarding cultural competency. Participants will identify key stages of the cultural competency continuum and explore how cultural norms impact on day-to-day curriculum decision-making. Participants will also utilise practical tools available to support children’s cultural and linguistic rights.

This session supports educators to consider a broad range of experiences or events which may contribute to a family’s vulnerable circumstance. Educators will deepen their awareness of the importance of acknowledging the child as part of a family unit and explore a partnership approach to supporting families in complex situations.
